NPOs do their bit for Mandela Day

KwaThema - On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Social Development, Thabang Xaba Foundation, Love Life and other stakeholders partnered to commemorate Mandela Day.

The organisations donated food parcels and helped households with chores in Extension Three and Marikana.

The aim of this project, which is being run over three days, is to expose and educate the youth about the challenges faced by residents in these areas.

Maduleni Somwahle (26), from the Isibindi Child and Youth Care Work, expressed the need for such programmes to be held on an ongoing basis and not just on one day.

“Mandela Day is not enough to solve all the problems we have, we need to commit ourselves as citizens to do good on a regular basis,” say Somwahle.

The different organisations identified households in need of assistance with food and other necessities so they may benefit from the programme.

The organisations have vowed to continue visiting these homes.

Thabang Xaba (30) says they will continue to work with the community of Extension Three and Marikana because there are many issues that have been identified.

“We will focus on helping community members who need ongoing assistance and try and educate them about ways they may curb poverty in their homes through agriculture and skills development”, says Xaba.
