Restoring dignity to the KwaThema Cemetery

KwaThema - Residents have been complaining about the poor state of the KwaThema Cemetery, but things are about to change as renovations are underway.

According to KwaThema Customer Care Centre manager Andries Nkabinde, the upgrades will ensure dignity is restored to the cemetery.

The renovations started on June 29.

Nkabinde says chairs will be placed in the cemetery for those visiting their buried loved ones and flower beds will be planted.

“Stands decorated with flowers will also be built at the entrance and there will also be a ‘KwaThema Cemetery’ signboard erected,” he says.

He adds the Ekurhuleni Metro hopes to soon solve the issue of security, the lack of which is the biggest challenge faced by the cemetery.

This will be a welcome addition, as tombstones have been stolen from the graveyard.

Nkabinde appeals to the community to protect the cemetery and report vandalism and any other criminal activities to police.

Mxolisi Kota, a community liaison officer, confirms the cemetery is faced with a theft problem.

He appeals to the community to look after the cemetery and show respect to those who are buried there.
