Police offer shot and wounded in KwaThema

A 50-year-old police officer from the Benoni K9 Unit has been admitted at the hospital in a serious but stable condition.

This is after the warrant officer was shot in the lower back during an operation at an informal settlement in KwaThema on Thursday at around 9pm.

According to Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, the injured police officer and another member were following information about drugs in Ekuthuleni Informal Settlement in that township.

He says when the police arrived in one of the shacks, they found four men who refused to allow them to search the premises.

“One of the suspects took out a firearm and shot at the police who shot back,” says Dlamini.

Adding that one of the suspects was shot dead while a police officer was wounded and rushed to a local hospital in Benoni.

An illegal firearm with five rounds of ammunition were seized from the deceased.
