International Day against Drug Abuse commemorated

Duduza - The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), in partnership with the Department of Social Development and other non-profit organisations, hosted an educational awareness campaign to commemorate International Day against Drug Abuse.

The event was held on Friday at the Duduza Customer Care Centre in Nala Street.

Community members were educated about substance abuse and other challenges families may encounter when living with an addict.

According to Sizakele Mngomezulu (34), a social worker at Sanca, people are not informed enough about handling and living with a drug addict.

“Family members need to be educated on how to deal with an addict in their home,” says Mngomezulu.

She added that family members must seek professional help as soon as they suspect a family member is using drugs.

The crime rate in the community is escalating and community members are concerned its a result of youngsters who are involved in drugs.

Harry Manaka (36), from the Duduza SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, explained that police are focused on getting to the core of the crisis, and not just arresting drug addicts.

“These young people are intoxicated when they commit crime, so we need to focus on the root of the problem as a community,” says Manaka.

Sanca reached out to the community to also stand up and get involved in the fight against drug abuse.
