Different views about Youth Day

Kwatsaduza - Youth in Kwatsaduza have many views about Youth Day.

Some of the young people say that the day is just like any public holiday that exists on the South African calendar.

Sibongile Khuzwayo sees it as a special day to celebrate the role played by the youth of 1976 to fight against the apartheid system.

She says the day seems to have no positive meaning to many, and that young people use it to get drunk and drive under the influence of alcohol.

She believes that the youth need more education about the day and how to celebrate it.

“Thousands of young people paid with their lives for the youth of today to be free and have a voice to talk with the government about the challenges facing them,” says Khuzwayo.

However, Ntokozo Sangweni says he does not see the need for him to celebrate the day.

“Our government leaders always talk about young people empowerment while the number of unemployed young people increases everyday,” he explains, concluding that the day means nothing to him.
