Daveyton boys rescued from initiation school

Daveyton - A case of kidnapping against three suspects who were arrested in connection with taking young boys to an initiation school has been withdrawn.

This comes after 11 boys between the ages of 13 and 16 years from Daveyton were taken to an initiation school.

According to police spokesman Major Mack Mngomezulu, the boys were allegedly taken from the streets of the township on Saturday and transported in a Quantum to an initiation school in Mpumalanga without their parents’ consent.

He says worried parents opened a case of kidnapping at the Daveyton police station on Sunday after they were informed by their children’s friends about their whereabouts.

Mngomezulu explains that when the police visited the school to investigate the matter, some of the children denied being forced to go to the initiation school.

“Some boys agreed to come back home with the police while others insisted on remaining in the school, claiming to be there at their own will to become men,” Mngomezulu says.

Adding that the three suspects who were arrested were released on Wednesday after a short appearance before the magistrate in Daveyton.

“The magistrate withdrew the case arguing that the court did not receive any official statements from the boys,” he says.

Mngomezulu appeals to the community to report such incidents.
