The fight against substance abuse continues

Tsakane - More than 50 young people learnt about the effects of alcohol abuse at a session hosted by the Tsakane Youth Development Programme (TYDP) on Monday.

The event was held at the Tsakane Main Clinic, and follows the similar session held by World Drug Free SA at the clinic on May 25 about the dangers of drug abuse.

According to Pule Moloi, managing director of TYDP, the organisation realised the youth also need to understand the dangers of alcohol abuse in order to educate others.

Moloi says his organisation is recruiting young people to join them in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse in the townships.

“All those who have been trained in awareness about drug and alcohol abuse will write a test to measure their knowledge and readiness to educate others,” he says.

Those who past the test, which will be written towards the end of the year, will become drug and alcohol abuse facilitators.

Moloi says they will visit schools and different communities in and around Springs to educate children, teenagers and parents about the consequences of drug abuse, while also sharing information about the signs of abuse and prevention tips.

One of the young people who attended the session is 21-year-old Katleho Motloung from Tsakane.

He says what he learned will help him stay away from drugs.

Katleho, who has never taken drugs before, is confident the information will help change the lives of many young drugs addicts.
