Resident left homeless after shack fire

KwaThema - A resident of KwaThema Extension Three, Marikana Section, has been left homeless after a fire damaged his shack.

Resident Sandile Gatsheni (30) says he left his coal stove burning last Friday while he went to buy a few groceries at a local shop at about 7pm.

“When I came back I discovered my shack was on fire” says Gatcheni.

He explains he tried to extinguish the fire with water, but the flames were too strong and the fire had spread to both rooms of the shack.

Gatsheni suspects the curtain near the stove caught alight.

All of his belongings were destroyed in the blaze and he currently has nowhere to stay.

Ward 77 councillor Wilson Busakwe says the Red Ants will rebuild the shack so Gatsheni has a home again.

He warns residents to be cautious with coal stoves and other appliances and heat sources this winter.

“A fire can start at any time,” he adds.
