Emergency workers not safe from criminals

Kwatsaduza - The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has a responsibility to assist the community in times of danger.

The recent hijackings of ambulances in parts of the country have raised questions about the safety of DEMS employees.

Crime is an issue in most communities and it's alarming when emergency workers are targeted.

When people serving the community no longer feel safe, it becomes a social problem.

Paramedic Palesa Bulane (29) expressed her concern about the recent crimes committed against DEMS employees.

“As women, we are more at risk of being taken advantage of, but we have to go out wherever we are called out too,” says Bulane.

These workers are also part of the community and strive to deliver a satisfactory service.

It is the responsibility of the public to try and keep them safe.

DEMS spokesperson William Tladi says the safety of personnel is distressing, but what makes them proud is that through all the difficulties faced on a daily basis, members are still able to serve the community of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with dignity.
