Dube conquers the Comrades 24 times

Wright Park - Resident Themba Dube (53) has run the Comrades Marathon every year for 24 years.

He took up running after suffering an injury on the soccer pitch, and started participating in local road running races in 1988.

Dube first participated in the Comrades Marathon in 1991 and attained a silver medal after completing the race in seven hours and 27 minutes.

“I did not know that all these years later I would be fitter than when I was younger,” says Dube.

Dube has since attained 16 silver medals, one bronze medal and seven Bill Rowan Medals.

He finished this year’s race in a time of eight hours and nine minutes.

Dube says his mentor is fellow marathon runner Peter Peyerl who helped him improve his running times.

“As long as I don’t sustain any injuries, I won’t be retiring any time soon,” says Dube.

He believes running teaches one patience.
