Holes pose danger

Tsakane - Residents of Khama Street in Rockville have had to dodge giant holes for the past three months.

Tsakane – Residents of Khama Street in Rockville have had to dodge giant holes for the past three months.

The holes were excavated in March after a water pipe burst.

Residents are not pleased that the Ekurhuleni Metro has taken so long to repair the pipes.

Thabile Hlongwane (18) expressed the challenges these holes pose for residents on a daily basis.

She struggles to get out of her gate and has to be extra cautious.

A major concern to residents is that children sometimes play near these holes.

“It is a struggle to get into our yards, especially at night, and we always have to be mindful of the holes,” says Hlongwane.

In addition to the holes, residents have been struggling with poor water pressure since the pipe burst.

Busisiwe Mhlongo (34) says she has to get up an hour earlier in the mornings so she can bath before going to work.

“The water from the tap just drips, and it takes a long time just to fill the kettle,” says Mhlongo.

It is alleged that one of the neighbourhood children fell into one of the holes.

Themba Gadebe, spokesperson of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM,) says the trenches on Khama Street were opened by third party companies who are installing fibre optic cables.

He adds that contractors still need to complete the repair work to the pipes.
