Workers from the transport company distributed safety awareness pamphlets and water bottles to motorists and pedestrians at the railway level crossing in Enstrada Road, Payneville.
It is believed that almost all collisions at level crossings are due to dangerous and risky behaviour displayed by motorists and pedestrians.
Transnet Freight Rail manager Joel Maja says this is because the rules are not respected or are simply ignored when the road user is in a hurry to reach their destination.
“This behaviour may lead to unsafe decisions, which can cause death or serious injuries, and their decision to disobey the signs may put other people’s lives in danger,” he adds.
The pamphlets urged road users to obey the signs at railway level crossings, and provided the following information:
- It takes more than 1km for a train to stop.
- The train has right of way.
- In the last five years more than 600 people have died at level crossings.
- Look left, right and left again, and only cross if there are no trains in sight.
