Crèches unite for Child Protection Week

Duduza - Last Friday the Simyaphambile Duduza Association of Crèches hosted a march for Child Protection Week.

Local crèches affiliated to the association participated in the march.

The march was themed ‘No to Xenophobia’ following the horrific attacks on foreign nationals earlier this year.

Starting at the Duduza police station in Nala Street, the march ended at the Monty Motloung Hall in Ndudula Street, where educational talks were delivered to the children.

Children then recited poems about xenophobia.

Principal of Mabel Zozo Crèche, Sophie Mabena (53), explains that xenophobia also affects young children.

“Children watch television and some hear their parents talk negatively about foreign nationals, they are aware of xenophobia,” says Mabena.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) were present to teach the children about fire and road safety.

Precious Biyela (27), a parent, says children need to learn about safety in order to protect themselves.

“Our children may face danger anywhere in the community, but if a child has been taught safety rules then they can protect themselves,” says Biyela.

Mabena further stated that parents must play an active role in teaching their children about safety.
