Bakery strike continues

Springs - Workers from the Blue Shirt Bakery were still protesting outside the bakery in Main Reef Road yesterday (Tuesday).

The protest for a 15% wage increase and provident fund is far from over.

Workers claim they will not back down until management has given into their demands.

Paul Sithole (48), Congregated and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (Cawusa) organiser, claims the bakery management has not yet addressed the workers, which will result in the strike continuing.

Betty Mathande (45), the bakery’s shop steward, alleges they had a meeting with management on May 22, where they discussed increases.

She claims management proposed a 7% wage increase.

“We later asked for 10%, but they refused,” says Mathande.

Employees are angered by management’s alleged refusal to give them a provident fund.

The strike will continue for the rest of the week.
