Fighting illegal dumping by cleaning bins
KwaThema - A group of young people from Highland Section are fighting illegal dumping in their neighbourhood.
Nkululeko Mathebula says they were sick and tired of the stench emanating from an illegal dumping site near Rapodile Street and decided to clean it.
The area is now where they clean 240lt bins on a daily basis.
“We decided to clean the 240lt bins because we are unemployed, and instead of focusing our energy on something negative, we decided on something positive”, says Mathebula.
She encourages the community to use the 240lt bins, instead of simply dumping their rubbish.
Mathebula explains they clean about 80 bins a day, and would like this to increase to 150 by the end of July.
Makhosazana Madonsela urges other members of the youth to start projects that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.
