Gardening to help the unemployed

Duduza- The community of John Dube faces a common challenge like many others in the country - unemployment.

Keketso Madyibi (48), who is a general worker at the Tsakane Clinic in Extension 11, could not sit back and watch her neighbours struggle.

Since moving to John Dube three years ago, she has seen many families affected by unemployment, and struggling to put food on the table.

With a number of child-headed families also in the area, she saw a need to involve her neighbours in growing vegetable gardens.

Every day after work, Madyibi teaches the youth about the importance of growing vegetables.

“I want to see every house in John Dube having it’s own vegetable garden and benefiting from it,” she says.

A number of residents of Msholozi Street, where Madyibi lives, have vegetable gardens.

Thabiso Kunene (25), who is one of the young men growing vegetables for his family, expressed how the garden has helped his family have a meal at night.

Madyibi buys all the seeds for planting with her own money and receives donations from various community members.

She believes that hunger and poverty can be eradicated if communities stand together as one.
