Every child needs quality education

Kwatsaduza - It is in our constitution that every child in South Africa is entitled to quality education.

That right can be easily violated if learning material is not available.

It is a sad truth that some of our local schools still don’t have enough textbooks for learners, and learners still have to share textbooks during lessons.

At some schools, only the teacher has a textbook.

As a result, all the notes have to be written on the board for learners to copy.

This takes up time meant for teaching.

Learners also face a problem when they have to do their homework, and many have to stay behind after school to do this.

Parent Gabisile Mokoena (36) is concerned that her child comes home late after school because she has to stay behind and do her homework.

Most learners agree that a shortage of textbooks does affect their academic performance.

Smangele Mfene (16), a Grade Nine learner from N.N Ndebele Secondary School in Duduza, claims her school marks have dropped since she started high school, because of a shortage of textbooks.

Spokesperson of the Gauteng Department of Education, Oageng Pitoro, requested a list of all the schools that allegedly don’t have textbooks.
