Prostitutes on duty

Springs - Young women have resorted to selling their bodies in order to survive

Prostitutes can be found on street corners in towns across the country.

Gone are the days when prostitutes worked the streets only at night – these days they can be seen any time of the day.

Nomsa Ndlovu (26), started working as a prostitute three years ago, when a friend introduced her to the profession.

At the time, she was unemployed and had a child to feed.

This is the case for most women who work the streets of Springs, and the majority of them come from Kwatsaduza and the neighbouring townships.

Nomsa has always wanted to be a nurse, but due to financial problems, she had to abandon her dream.

Her family and partner think she works as a domestic worker in Springs.

She stands along Zig Zag Road waiting for clients.

From Monday to Friday, she leaves home early in the mornings, and stops ‘work’ at 5pm.

Over weekends, she works at night.

Unemployment is the main reason many women are forced into prostitution.

“There are no jobs in South Africa and we need to feed our children and families” they said.

Local sex workers claim there is good money to be made, and on good days they can earn as much as R500.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are their busiest days, and some women can see up to 10 clients a day.

Depending on what the client wants or where he wants to take them, prostitutes can charge anything from R50 to R100.

Their clients vary in age between 35 and 60, and are of different races.

The women say they don’t mind the risks of the job, such as rape and robbery, because they need the money.

They say they will only stop working as prostitutes if they find well-paid jobs.
