Residents no longer want containers

KwaThema – Industrial containers have been abandoned by the Ekurhuleni Metro after the repairing of RDP houses in Riverside Section.

According to resident Thuli Maseko, the containers were meant to be temporary homes for residents staying in old RDP houses, while the municipality carried out repairs to the houses.

The containers were placed in the area in 2013.

Maseko explains the containers were supposed to be removed by the municipality after the repairs were complete.

She complains the containers have caused a rodent infestation, as well as an increase in criminal activity.

Illegal gamblers are reported to frequent the area and some residents are even running businesses from the containers.Another resident, Mphikeleli Thukwane (33), says the container in front of his house is an obstruction.

“My sister was recently sick and needed medical treatment, but she had to to be carried to the ambulance because the stretcher didn’t fit past the container,” he says.

He believes there is no longer a need for the containers as they have served their purpose.

Thukwane says there was a community meeting on Sunday and the matter was highlighted, and ward councillor for the area, George Vilakazi, promised to provide feedback.

According to Vilakazi, a contractor came to the area to remove the containers, but residents refused to have them removed.

He adds 12 to 16 houses situated on water-logged land will not be repaired.

These residents will be relocated to new RDP houses, which are yet to be built.
