Carcasses leave a bad stench in Duduza

Thabang Mofokeng works as a taxi marshal in Extension 15, and for the past four years, has had to deal with the unbearable smell of animal carcasses.

Duduza –

It is believed the remains, mostly cow and sheep heads, have been dumped at the corner of Sibongiseni and Khama streets by local restaurant owners.

“To come here everyday, and have to deal with this smell, is unbearable,” says Mofokeng.

He is not the only person complaining about the bad odour, and many vendors have moved to other areas because of this problem.

Taxi driver Lesego Moroe (25), who spends most of his days at the taxi rank, is also fed up with the stench.

“I want to know why these people don't dump their waste in garbage bins, this is a public space and not a dustbin?” says Moroe.

Mofokeng also expressed that when the weather is hot, hundreds of flies swarm the area and the smell is even more unbearable.

He claims this is health hazard.

It’s alleged the people responsible for dumping the remains do so at night, so they can’t be seen.

Many community members have expressed their concern about the remains as small children also play in the area.

Comment was requested from the Ekurhuleni Metro, but none had been received at the time of publishing.
