Metro Police Officer bumps 9-year-old boy

KwaThema - A nine-year-old boy was allegedly struck by an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) vehicle in Riverside yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

EMPD spokesman Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago says the accident happened at the corner of Mohlala and Baduza streets, at around 1.20pm.

“It is alleged the nine-year-old boy ran into the road and was bumped by a metro police vehicle,” says Kgasago.

He claims the boy sustained slight injuries and was rushed to Pholosong Hospital.

Kgasago says the driving permit of the EMPD officer involved in the accident was confiscated.

He is also not allowed to drive any council vehicle until an investigation into the incident has been finalised by the EMPD’s Standards and Integrity Unit.

A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.

At the time of publishing, KwaThema police spokesman Capt Mandla Phori was unable to confirm if a case had been opened.
