Karatekas bag gold at tournament

KwaThema - The KwaThema Karate Tournament was held at the Phelang LSEN School hall on Saturday.

The tournament was hosted by the Pan African Shotokan Karate-Do Federation.

Chief instructor of the federation, sensei Michael Cindi, says the tournament’s first round was held on April 1 and 30 karatekas were selected.

He explains the second round was held at Kenneth Masikela Secondary School and 31 karatekas were selected.

Saturday’s tournament was the finals, and local karatekas Ronelwa Mophohane (8), Sibusiso Magubane (10), Siyabonga Magagula (10) and Theo Lesudi (17) received gold medals.

“The theme of the tournament was saying no to xenophobic attacks,” says Cindi.

Cindi says karate clubs from all over the country participated in the tournament.

According to Cindi, the national junior championships will be hosted by United World Karate Federation of South Africa, in Cape Town, from August 21 to 22.
