Jimmy the drum master

Duduza - Jimmy the Drums is the name he goes by.

Jabulani Jimmy Jele (33), was born in KwaThema and grew up in Duduza.

Jimmy started his schooling career at Roseview Primary School in Duduza, where he participated in cultural dancing and was first introduced to the drums.

After matriculating from NN Ndebele Secondary School, one of his cousins suggested he join a cultural group in Tsakane.

He was a member of the Amasikho cultural group from 2002 until 2006.

While in the group, his interest in drumming grew.Practice is what made Jimmy the good drummer he is today.

His love for the drums also stems from his taste in music – he enjoys Cuban music and Afro-jazz.

Percussionist Killer Mafra is his biggest inspiration.

In 2006, he left the Amasikho cultural group and pursued a career as a DJ.

He started off by playing at a pub in Duduza as a resident DJ, and was mentored by other DJ’s.

On one particular day, while one of his fellow DJ’s was playing, Jimmy took out his drums and played along with the track.

The crowd was in a frenzy, and since then, he has never looked back.

He can play percussion for all types of music, but prefers house music.

In 2012 he was introduced to famous DJ’s Fresh and Euphonik, and now plays percussion for them when they tour.

His status has taught him to be disciplined and humble, and he believes image is everything.

Apart from playing at gigs, he also runs his own events company.
