Documentary exposing crime towards the LGBTI community to be screened
KwaThema - An award winning documentary exposing hate crimes against lesbians will be screened in KwaThema today (April 24).
On the fourth anniversary of the killing of lesbian activist Noxolo Nogwaza (24), Amnesty International and Backstory Productions screened a documentary highlighting the struggle against homophobia in South Africa.
Nogwaza, a KwaThema resident, was brutally killed in 2011.
African Pride explores how South Africans are countering homophobic violence and hate crimes with pride marches and protests in townships.
“African Pride introduces us to the mourners, survivors, families and friends who take to the streets to demand justice for those lost, equality for the living and for their own human right to live peacefully in their communities,” says Laura Fletcher, director of African Pride and owner of Backstory Productions.
According to Fletcher, the documentary highlights the ongoing violence and discrimination faced by lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in most townships.
This first public screening of the film in South Africa will took place 6pm at the KwaThema Old Age Home.
