Local DJ brings down the house

Daveyton - Remember the name Julius 'Gmza' Khoza. This genuine DJ from the streets of Daveyton could be your future favourite.

Khoza (27) studied at Inkatha Ka Zulu Primary School and matriculated from Lesiba Secondary School.

After school he enrolled at the Damelin Benoni City Campus where he studied journalism and media studies.

“My father loved reggae and RnB and used to collect cassettes and records, so I grew up in a musical environment,” says Khoza.

His parents, Emily and Lucas, are his greatest inspiration.

According to Khoza, he was introduced to house music by a friend in primary school, and the pair used to listen to DJ Fresh compilations.

He adds his love for the genre grew when he started listening to radio stations like Yfm 99.2, when legends like the late Fana Khaba (Khabzela) were still hot on the radio.

Khoza explains in 2008 he decided to form a group “The Funk Masters” with Mpendulo “Pezo” Gumede and Piet “DJ formal” Thipe.

“We started as resident DJs at a local tavern doing the Sunday sessions,” said Khoza.

“It was hopeless, but we held out until they bought a sound system in 2010.”

In 2012, Khoza started doing ‘Local Connection’ mixtapes, which became a great success.

“This was good exposure for me because I started gaining recognition and started getting bookings and friends from around the world,” he says.

According to Khoza, he has played at the House Web Sessions in Brazil, UJfm Urban Drive, House365Radio, Boulevard (Delmas), Quinta Carrope (Mozambique), Before Sunset in Wattville, The Dawn Pub, Scondas Bar, Kopano Sports Bar, Eyethu, 2 Tone and Swaziland to add a few places.

Khoza aspires to own a recording company within the next five years and hopes to open a school for up-and-coming Ekurhuleni DJs.
