Foreign-owned business robbed

KwaThema police could not confirm whether a business burglary that took place in KwaThema on Friday was related to the xenophobic attacks happening in other parts of the country.

This follows a burglary at a tuck shop in the township at about 10am.

Captain Mandla Phori of KwaThema police says they were informed about the incident by community members.

He says a group of 25 men were seen forcing their way into the shop.

When the police arrived on the scene, however, the group had already fled with groceries and airtime vouchers.

Phori explains that the owner of the tuck shop, who resides in Struisbuilt , took the remaining stock and closed the shop in fear for his safety.

A street vendor who works near the tuck shop, Thembinkosi Dlamini, says he saw a group of men armed with sticks shouting that foreign nationals should leave the country.

“They broke into the shop, taking groceries and also damaged the rest of the stock,” said Dlamini.

Police have opened a case of business burglary and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with the information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect/s should contact the KwaThema police on 011 812 4600.
