Local school under construction

Being subjected to severe weather conditions will soon be a thing of the past for learners and staff at Menzi Primary School.

The school, which is situated in Langaville, currently makes use of zinc containers for classrooms, which are boiling hot in summer and freezing cold in winter.

This is all about to change, as preparations for the construction of a new school building is under way.

At this stage, trenches have been dug on the site where the foundation of nine blocks will be built.

In addition to classrooms, the school will also boast a hall, and a nutrition and admin centre.

Speaking on behalf of the constructor on site, Chris van Loggerenberg, said if the weather does not halt work at the site, the construction will be complete after eight months.

He said the construction will also bring employment to the residents of that area.

Ward councillor Mthumeleni Nditha said he believes the new classrooms will help learners concentrate.

He explained that not everyone who is currently unemployed will find employment at the site, but the constructor will, however, provide jobs to a large number of residents for the duration of the construction phase.

Nditha appealed to the community to protect the school at all times.

“Do not allow the school to be vandalised once it has been built,” he said.

Johannes Sekhukhuni, one of the residents who is already employed on the site, confirmed that the construction of the school is helping him and others support their families.

“I have been unemployed, but today, I am able to provide for my family,” he said.
