Residents move foreign-owned tuck shop

A container owned by foreign traders was moved from a yard in KwaThema on Thursday evening

The container, from where a tuck shop was trading, was moved to the middle of Ncamani Street by unknown residents of Interland.

Resident Lindiwe Lasindwa says before the container was placed in the residential area, the community was supposed to be consulted on whether they wanted another tuck shop in the area.

Lasindwa explains one of the reasons the community might have taken the law into their own hands is because their concerns were never addressed.

She says there were numerous meetings between the parties involved, including the owner of the property on which the container was placed, the foreign traders, KwaThema SAPS and the councillor for the area, Johannes Busakwe (Ward 77), but none of the issues were resolved.

Lasindwa says there are enough businesses in the area, and there is no demand for another tuck shop.

According to Busakwe, there are 59 containers owned by foreign traders in his ward.

He explains he is aware of the incident and has been involved in resolving the matter.

Busakwe confirms the neighbours were not consulted before the container was placed on property.

“Last week Wednesday I was with the owner and the foreign traders at the KwaThema police station trying to resolve the issue, and discovered the trader has other businesses in KwaThema,” says Bosakwe.

He says the problem with the containers is they are often placed on corner stands in residential areas, which causes accidents as motorists cannot see other vehicles on the road.

Busakwe says the containers also add to crime in the area, as they close late.

This, according to him, also affects local businesses.

The container has not been moved from its position in Ncamani Street.

The owner of the house refused to speak to the African Reporter.
