Help for drug addicts

Seeing the youth on drugs made a Daveyton mother realise she needed to help.

Ellen Mphothulo Mavuso (45), who has three children, felt pain when she saw many young people in the township throwing away their future and becoming addicted to drugs.

She started a drug education programme last year, where she spoke to 45 drug addicts, aged between 12 and 35 years old, about the dangers of drug abuse, and gave them guidance for a brighter future.

In her efforts to rid society of drugs and to create a better tomorrow for the addicts, Mavuso is working with former Kaizer Chiefs player, Thabiso ‘Skaapie’ Malatsi.

This year, they are also helping drug addicts in KwaThema.

Speaking about her voluntary work, Mavuso said it is her dream to see young people drug-free and working towards building their future.

“I believe that I was born to help the youth, and encourage them not to lose hope but strive for the best in their lives,” said Mavuso.

Sharing his story with the addicts from KwaThema on Monday, Malatsi confessed that his addiction to drugs made him lose many of the things he had worked hard to achieve.

To help defeat their cravings for drugs, Malatsi advised the addicts to grab the opportunities presented to them.

He also believes that every young person has a talent and they need to work hard to make their talents shine and be seen by the world.

“I know how much you can lose because of drugs, and that is why I also made it my responsibility to ensure that you quit early before you fall into the same trap as I did,” he said.
