Road safety campaign

A road safety awareness campaign, aimed at reducing accidents over the Easter season, was held on Saturday.

The campaign was hosted by the Department of Social Development, the SAPS, the Department of Emergency Services and non-governmental organisation, Twinplug.

Siboniso Sibiya, the chairperson of Twinplug, says this is the second annual Arrive Alive campaign, the aim of which is to warn pedestrians, motorists and commuters about the dangers of drinking and travelling.

According to Sibiya, motorists and passengers must wear seat belts at all times, especially when using public transport. He explains the campaign convoy proceeded from the Duduza Rank to Tsakane Mall, where they shared information and addressed the community about the rules of the road, and how they protect both pedestrians and motorists.

SAPS Youth Desk chairperson Veronica Manala says the campaign, which targeted taxi ranks, received a positive response from taxi drivers.

“We wanted to inform the community about road safety because it’s Easter holidays, and people will be travelling all over and getting on unroadworthy vehicles,” she says.
