Nkuna’s blindness changed his life

Being blind is what changed Zachariah Nkuna's life for the worse.

The Langaville resident was born with sight in both his eyes, but became blind in 2008.

His blindness robbed him of his freedom to move round his yard and the ability to provide for his big family.

Nkuna family’s next meal now depends on the pension grant that he gets every month.

He lives in a shack and depends on a handmade walking stick to move around the yard and visit neighbours who live close by.

Rose Mathusi, Nkuna’s wife said they always live in fear that Nkuna might get hurt when trying to move around.

She also revealed that when the solar power that they use for light does not have sufficient power to give light to Nkuna’s bedroom, he sleeps in the dark because of the fear that the candle might fall down and burn down their home.

Mathusi said going to the toilet is one of the challenges that the family is facing.

She explained that Nkuna needs to be accompanied to an open veld when he is in need of using a toilet.

Kwatsaduza community and workers’ forum member, Lucas Hlatjwako appealed for the metro to intervene and help Nkuna’s family by building them an RDP house.

He said when it rains, the family’s shack turns to a dam as water gets inside and reaches above their ankles.

Hlatjwako also explained that Nkuna is in need of a decent walking stick which will help him move freely around the yard.
