Three rapists jailed for 61 years

Three men accused of raping a 15-year-old girl from KwaThema, were recently sentenced to prison in Springs Regional Court two.

Magistrate Benita Oswell sentenced Sfiso Mnaeni (18), Thabang Skhakane (29) and Themba Mahlangu (29) to 61 consecutive years imprisonment between the three.

The Mahlangu pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve a total of 25 years in prison on January 31.

His sentence was made up of five years for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 20 years for rape.

He testified against his two co-accused on March 18.

The Skhakane was sentenced to 20 years for rape and one year for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, requiring him to serve 21 years in prison.

The Mwaeni was sentenced to 13 years behind bars – 10 years for rape and three years for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.This comes after they accompanied the girl to her friend’s house, assaulted and gang raped her in August 2013.

Springs police official Amanda Greybe, says the men were arrested in KwaThema Extension Three on the day of the rape.

Springs police’s warrant officer Rudi Jansen, from the Family Violence Unit, was the investigating officer.

Mahlangu and Skhakane will serve their sentence at Modderbee Prison and Mwaeni was taken to a juvenile facility.

Greybe says their names will be placed on the sexual offence register and they were declared unfit to possess firearms.
