Captain Petros Mabuza of the Tsakane police says the man, who was living alone in his home, was found dead with burn wounds over his body on Tuesday afternoon.
He says the neighbours, who were worried after not seeing the old man in his yard, rushed to his home to check if he was there.
Mabuza says the concerned neighbours called the police after realising that the old man was not responding while his bedroom door was locked from the inside.
“The police broke the door to gain access and the man was found dead with burn wounds,” says Mabuza.
He says the police suspect that the man died after his room caught fire.
However, he says the police are still investigating the cause of death and an inquest docket has been opened.
