Wetlands day at Langaville

The Gauteng Department of Rural Development and Agriculture celebrated International Wetlands Day with the community of Langaville last Friday.

MMC of Environmental Resources Management Vuyelwa Mabena says it is everyone’s responsibility to protect wetlands.

“Wetlands play an important role by controlling erosion and the reduction of severe droughts and floods by regulating stream flows”, said Mabena.

A learner from Langaville Secondary School, Sizwe Sibeko said he is fascinated by nature and the water systems.

Sibeko added his participation on the day has encouraged him to aspire to be a hydrologist one day.

According to spokesperson of the metro, Themba Gadebe the learners from Langaville Secondary School and Menzi Primary School received a practical natural sciences lesson on wetland preservation.

He says the practical included examples of the natural river water purification to demonstrate a healthy ecosystem provides human beings with essential life resources.

Gadebe adds two indigenous trees were planted nearby the Mbokazi Wetlands during the celebration to emphasise the importance of preserving the environment.

In his conclusion he says the community of Langaville rolled their sleeves up and joined in the activities of purifying the wetland.
