Are leaders born or made?

A good leader is a person who is humble and does not undermine the people who put him in the highest position.

Being born and lived in this country for the rest of my life, I have witnessed many politicians appealing for votes from the citizens when the elections time closer.

The promises that they make to the desperate citizens who are hungry for better life, make the citizens believe every word that they say.

It is not a rare sight to see the politicians going door to door especially to the old peoples houses making all the promises that the senior citizens can not resist.

It is true that not all the poor families are in the situation because no one has the necessary skills that will make him find a job so that he can look after his family.

Our fathers worked hard in gold mines while our mothers were domestic workers in order to ensure that we get the education that will help us have a better future, however not everyone gets employment.

Because the politicians are people who know the challenges faced by many families especially in the townships, they use these struggles to gain themselves more votes knowing very well that the communities are willing to try anything promised to them go change their lives for the best.

It surprises me to see that some of the elected leaders do not only forget about the promises they made to the community but also becomes arrogant and undermines them.

I believe that a leader is someone who takes his time and listens to his people while also showing respect to them despite their social status.

Sometimes we blame the community for the disorder taking place in the townships and point fingers to the individuals who are believed to be the leaders of the chaos but we always seem to forget that poverty and hunger can cause a person to be violent.

Hear me well, I am not encouraging crime, violent protests or the vandalism of government properties and looting of ward counsellors homes, but I am reminding our community leaders about the importance of communication between them and the people who they serve.

A leader is not selfish, but someone who has the interest of the people who put him on the seat which he occupies at heart.

He understands that those who put him there still have the power to take him off that mighty chair and put someone else who will serve them with pride and dignity.
