Art session in KwaThema

Brothers in Wordplay hosted an art session in celebration of international black history month at KwaThema, Extension Two on Sunday.

Founder of the art organization Themba Twala says the aim of the session is to educate and enlighten the youth about African history.

Twala elaborates the organisation has many art forms which they showcase such as poetry, visual arts, music, drama and dancing.

He says the organisation began three years ago when a need in the community was seen to expose local talent.

According to Twala this session is so young people can learn to voice their feelings through the spoken word and art.

“The youth have a right to make positive choices, focus on their God given talent and even earn a living with their craft”, says Twala.

Co-founder of Brothers in Wordplay, Thabo Malohle says art in Kwatsaduza is not given enough support by the government which leads to the youth involving themselves in substance abuse and not having an activity to stimulate their minds.

Malohle urges the youth to take pride in who they are, follow their dreams and respect their elders.

The Blue Gum Jazz Band, contemporary dancer Masego Dialo and drama group Special Stars were the highlight acts of the day.

The event ended with an open mic session where poets shared their pieces.
