Tsakane residents claim that they used an open space as their dumping site after the waste has not been removed for three months.

An open space between Chicago and Extension 13 in Tsakane has been turned into an illegal dumping site by residents.

According to one of the residents, Nathi Nhlapho, residents were tired of living with dustbins full of waste after the metro failed to collect the waste.

However, he said the illegal site also threatens their health and safety.

“We are not only complaining about illegal dumping in that area, but also not happy about the grass that has not been cut for a long time,” said Nhlapho.

Adding that the grass and foliage which seem to be over two metres high is a hiding place for criminals.

He said crossing in that area alone at night is not safe as criminals wait there to rob people of their belongings.

Nhlapho said the metro should not only clean the area but should also consider better ways of utilising the land.

He said the land should be given to residents who want to grow vegetables to sell and feed their families.

DA councillor Shelly Loe promised the residents that she will report the matter to the relevant council departments.

She said she will also follow up on complaints by residents that their new 240lt refuse bins have been stolen.

Ward 84 councillor, Silas Thabo Lestimo was not available to comment.
