Become a property valuer

This is an interesting job.

Being a property valuer is a fantastic job.

This is what Johan Roos, a local property valuer says about this career.

Johan says young people who want to follow this career have to study a BA degree in either property, legal or marketing or start working under a mentor before becoming a valuer.

For the university studies students will need a university exemption in matric.

Although not compulsory, he also advises them to have mathematics and accountancy as matric subjects, because it will be of great benefit in this career.

After the degree studies and when a student has worked for a while with his registered valuer-mentor, he has to pass an examination set by property valuers board.

This is not an easy examination, but will be passed if someone has worked with a mentor for a while.

He says there are three types of valuers – a professional, an associated professional valuer, and candidate valuer.

The student who does not want to go to university and works with a mentor becomes a candidate valuer.

The candidate valuer then does all the same work as any valuer, but his work has to be scrutinized and signed off by his mentor.

Johan says the process to become an associated professional valuer will take about four to seven years.

There are several places where a valuer can work – in the commercial fields, industrial areas, financial institutions or at municipalities.

After being an associated professional valuer for a while, the valuer can to become a professional valuer.

He says he is very worried about the age profile of the qualified valuers currently in this country.

There are not enough young people currently qualifying for this job.

He says what is wonderful about being a valuer is that this is not an “office job”, but one that takes you outside the confines of the office.

You can also do this work from home.
