Senior Surgeon dismissed fo gross negligence at Pholosong Hospital

Last Thursday the Gauteng Health Department dismissed a senior surgeon for gross negligence and contravention of theatre protocols.

According Head of Communication from the Department of Health, Prince Hamnca the department received reports suggesting a surgeon who was based at Pholosong Hospital left a patient on the operating table mid procedure.

Hamnca says his colleagues had to, on more than one occasion, plead with him to go back and complete the procedure.

Hamnca adds he is also alleged to have entered the theatre without scrubbing and wearing his personal jeans, violating theatre protocol.

Gauteng MEC of Health Qedani Mahlangu says, in the view of the seriousness of the allegations, having seen staff present on the day as well as the doctors response to his initial suspension; the department was left with no option but to effect a summary dismissal.

Mahlangu the departments decision is a clear and strong message to the entire professional staff of their intolerance to all forms of professional misconduct.

The matter will also be transferred to the Health Proffessions Council of South Africa. (HPCSA).
