New fire station is being built in KwaThema

The Ekurhuleni metro is currently in the process of building fire stations in KwaThema and Duduza, which will see Kwatsaduza boasting three fire stations.

According to KwaThema ward 78 councillor Thoko Radebe, Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) decided to build fire stations in the townships to improve service delivery.

Councillor Nthathane Mabena, Duduza ward 98 councillor, says the fire stations were long overdue as they were supposed to be completed last year.

Mabena adds that the reason why there has been delays is because there have been problems during the construction with the previous contractors’ contracts being terminated.

She says new contractors have been appointed this year and the construction of the fire stations is in process.

Mabena says currently on site there are skilled workers who are from the relevant townships building the fire stations.

Resident from KwaThema, Karabo Morapedi says he is happy there are going to be a fire station in these townships and he hopes they will save lives and create job opportunities.

Media Liason officer for DEMS,William Ntladi explains the metro has embarked on infrastructure development in order to enhance quality service delivery to its residents.

Ntladi says the department identified KwaThema and Duduza to be some of the areas in need of emergency health and safety services.

According to Ntladi, KwaThema was serviced by the Tsakane and Selection Park Fire Station respectively so by building these fire stations the response time will improve drastically.

The Duduza Fire Station is anticipated to be completed around June whilst the KwaThema Fire Station should be done by October.
