Project Extension 19, 22, 21 (Phase 19)

Residents of Extension 19, 22, 21 (Phase 19) had complaints regarding the housing project done around 2002 under the Housing Department.

According to resident Mirriam Mokhoathi, Extension 19 (phase19 ), she has been sharing a water connection with her neighbour for 10 years.

She says the RDP houses were built in 2002 with toilets yet with no running water.

She adds that the municipality still sends her statements claiming she owes close to R22 000 yet she uses her neighbour’s water connection.

She says when the mayor was elected the matter was reported at the Faranan Multi-purpose Centre yet nothing was done.

Leader of the Kwatsaduza Community and Workers’ Forum,Victor Lukhele, says the councillor was last seen in September when residents marched to the Tsakane Customer Care Centre to hand over a memorandum.

He says the area is flooded with water leakages which are not fixed for weeks on end.

Lukhele says the area has disabled residents who have not been subsidised by government.

He says the department of housing has been making promises to rectify the matter for the past decade yet nothing has been done.

According to Ekurhuleni spokesman, Themba Gadebe, the Tsakane Extension 19, 22, 21 (phase 19) is reticulated with both water and sewage networks.

He says the challenges go beyond their jurisdiction as some of the stands were invaded by people who were not supposed to occupy the stands. Gadebe says when water and sewage networks were installed no toilets were built at the time.

He explains that the Provincial Housing/Human Settlement Department was meant to approve subsidies and then build an RDP house with a toilet inside.

“Some of the subsidies were approved and those stands have water and toilets,” says Gadebe.

According to Gadebe the Human Settlement Department is to do an audit of the stands to determine who is situated wrongly, that process is going to assist in determining if water connections should continue to be done, even if the people are invading stands.

He says the department offered chemical toilets as a temporary measure, however, they were rejected.
