The residents of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) must be assured that there isn’t a water crisis.
Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the EMM says the metro advises all residents to use water wisely and sparingly since water in South Africa is scarce.
“This will minimise challenges of water shortage in the near future,” he says.
The municipality is current rolling out an educational programme to communities and is upgrading the existing infrastructure to minimise water losses.
“The recent incident of water shortage in Springs was due to cable theft and it has since been resolved.”
Rand Water has rolled out massive projects for infrastructure replacement to minimise water interruptions and water losses of this kind in the future.
The municipality, with assistance of the provincial government, is also monitoring all scrap metal yards for compliance to curb sales of copper cable.
The water saving tips below should be adhered to:
- Water your garden in the mornings or evenings, not at midday as most of that water evaporates.
- Repair the leaks on your property.
- Take shorter showers.
- Do not leave water running while brushing your teeth.
- Report water leaks promptly to the municipality.
The country is also exploring other alternatives of water source such as:
- Rain water harvesting.
- The use of grey water for industrial areas for cooling purposes.
- The expansion of the Lesotho Highlands projects.
- Ground water and treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD).
The municipality assures all residents that there isn’t any current problem with the water supply in the municipality, but that water is a scare commodity and a precious resource.
The metro says that if the measures indicated above are not adhered to, there might be a water crisis after all.
