Gauteng Legislature visits Pholosong

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature officials, together with the department of Infrastructure development, visited Pholosong Hospital on Tuesday.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the infrastructure challenges that the hospital is faced with.

The officials, led by the committee for infrastructure development chairman, Lindi Lasindwa toured the hospital to witness the challenges.

The touring of the facility was led by the hospital’s acting CEO Dr Ngila Bekoka.

One of the wards that were visited was a TB ward.

The challenge faced by this ward is that it is impossible to separate patients according to their level of sickness.

“The situation forces us to mix patients with the drug resistant TB strain with those who suffer from normal TB,” said Bekoka.

The other challenges faced by the hospital exist in the ante natal ward where there are only four progress rooms.

Bekoka said that the infrastructure in the ward is not welcoming.

Ten patients in labour depend on one toilet while the showers are in a bad state, some of the bathrooms need to be upgraded as they have been in use for more than 15 years.

The maternity ward also has a leaking roof.

In the emergency room, plugs are not working properly because they are overloaded.

The overloading in most times results to some of the machines to be switched off to allow a few to work properly.

After witnessing and hearing about the challenges faced by the hospital, Lasindwa said the legislature will expect a report from the department of the infrastructure about their plan to fix the problems faced by the hospital.

“We expect the department to have a plan of action within two weeks,” Lasindwa said.

She then promised that after four weeks, the legislature members will again visit the hospital to assess if there is anything being done regarding the infrastructure challenges faced by the hospital.
