Closing an open shaft in KwaThema

Following several complaints from the residents of KwaThema about an open mine shaft, it seems their frustrations will soon be over.

Residents’ sleepless nights worrying about the safety of their children when playing near the open shaft five in KwaThema that is situated in Kgaswane Street, will soon be yesterday’s story.

The African Reporter was invited by PR Councillor Busi Khoza and ward 77 councillor Wilson Busakwe to visit the site on Monday.

On the arrival the Council for Geoscience, a company that deals with closing the abandoned open shaft mines, was getting ready to continue with the work of closing the shaft.

One of the residents in KwaThema, Nomusa Dube, expressed her feelings about the closing of the shaft.

“I am happy that the shaft will no longer pose a danger to the lives of our children,” said Dube.

She said she was worried that the schools will soon be closed for the December holidays and the curiosity of children could drive them to see if what was happening on that site.

Dube said she wishes that the shaft will be closed to such an extent that no-one will be able to open it again.

No comment was received from the Council of Geoscience by the time of going to print.
