Bringing light to the streets

Walking and driving in the dark along Kgaswane Street in KwaThema will be no more.

The work of installing the street lights from Nkosi Street via Kgaswane until the Tonk Meter Road is underway.

According to ward councillor, Wilson Busakwe, the street lights are installed as part of delivering services to the residents of KwaThema.

He said the street lights, of which a few are already functional in other parts of the streets, are aimed also at decreasing crime that takes place as a result of darkness in those streets.

“Many residents have been victims of robbery by the criminals who wait and watch them as they walk alone along the darkest streets in the township at night,” said Busakwe.

He said the new lights will also fight against the car hijackings that happen when the drivers stop at stop signs during the night.

The safety of the pedestrians when crossing at these streets is also one of the reasons to have lights in these streets.

An open veld near the Extension Five RDP houses was also one of the places of concern where Busakwe feels that criminals might rob people and run towards a small forest not far from the street.

He said all the newly installed street lights are expected to be working before December.

Resident Mandla Mkhabela said he also believes that the street lights will help in a fight against crime.

He then appealed to the residents to avoid walking alone on the street at night.

“Fighting against crime starts with ensuring our safety on the streets and at our homes,” Mkhabela concluded.
