Youth talk about mining

The Ekurhuleni Environmental Organisation held a mining dialogue last Thursday.

The dialogue was held at the Holiness Church in KwaThema.

The young people in and around Ekurhuleni shared the stage when debating about the negative impact of mining in and around the communities of Ekurhuleni including KwaThema, Payneville and Grootvlei.

According to Siphesihle Phiri from Ekurhuleni Environmental Organisation, the organisation saw the need to host the mining dialogue following the many mine shafts that have been abandoned in the township.

“Many children, when playing next to the abandoned mines, get exposed to the dangerous chemicals that were used by mines,” said Phiri, adding that the organisation will fight against the turning of mine shafts into illegal dumping sites in the townships.

He promised the community of KwaThema that the organisation will ensure that the communities are educated about the impact of mining in the areas where they live.
