Helping hand for high school girls

The From a Girl to a Woman organisation, in partnership with Sindy Mabe, donated sanitary towels to the learners at Mamellong Comprehensive School.

The organisation, which is only one month old, has seen the need to help girl children by donating sanitary towels.

The organisation’s project manager, Nomvuyo Sebeko, said that, after realising that many girl learners from disadvantaged families are forced to miss school when it is time for their periods, the organisation knew that these learners need assistance.

“We realised that learners from poor families are absent from school for a minimum of three days a month, due to their periods,” said Sebeko.

She challenged other local organisations to invest in education, not only through the donation of school uniforms, but by ensuring that no girl child will be absent from school due to the challenges that can be easily overcome.

On the day of the presentation, the learners were not happy only about receiving sanitary towels, but also because they received encouragement from Sindy Mabe.

She reminded them of their values, while encouraging them to work hard for their success.

Mabe also shared her story with the learners.

She said that, to get to where she is today, she had to work at two jobs to complete her studies.

“I grew up with no fancy clothes, but always kept my eyes on my dream,” she said.

She told them that, when she was still in school, she also stood in a queue to get food provided by the government.

“Never allow the difficult circumstances to stand in your way to success,” she concluded.
