DA’s Maimane thrown out of Tsakane

While trying to help residents of Tsakane, the DA's Mmusi Maimane had to be escorted out of the township when residents made it known that he was unwelcome.

After residents of Tsakane had to spend days without water, the DA leader in parliament Mmusi Maimane visited the area on Saturday and again on Wednesday to access the problem.

During Maimane’s second visit to Tsakane, on Wednesday, since the water crisis in the area began, things did not end well.

According to the DA leader, Fortune Mahano this comes after people who are allegedly members of the ANC blocked the water tankers, which were brought into the area by Maimane to alleviate some of the challenges cause by the water shortage, at Tsakane Extension 17.

Mahano claimed that the ANC-clad residents brought DA T-shirts and burnt them while denying Maimane access to the area.

Maimane was escorted out of Tsakane by the police when it was made clear that he was not welcome in the area.Tsakane police spokesman Captain Petros Mabuza confirmed that to ensure Maimane’s safety, he had to be escorted out of Tsakane by the police.

However, he said no case has been opened.

When Maimane visited the area on Saturday, he led a group of DA members who, accompanied by residents, walked through the taxi rank and Tsakane Mall parking areas to collect signatures for a petition that demands different government departments to investigate the reasons for the widespread water outages.

During his visit, resident Victor Lukhele said children had to stop going to school because of the challenge of not having water in their homes.

“The water tanks delivered to the area were empty within an hour,” said Lukhele.

Gary Scallan, DA chairman for Tsakane and Brakpan area claimed there were not enough water tanks and that residents were not informed of where these water tanks would be located.
