Steven dreams of becoming a rap star

Steven ''Vavo-vogue'' Monoki (19) says he will work hard until he lives his dream.

Born in White City section, in KwaThema, Steven is determined to follow his dream of making a name for himself in the music industry.

Zamani Primary School in KwaThema is where he completed his primary education, before going on to Kenneth Masikela High School, where he passed Grade 12.

He says it was in 2010 when he realised that he has a talent to sing and fell in love with rap music.

One thing Steven likes about this music genre is that it allows him to deliver the message to the young people in a language they understand.

“When talking to the youth, you need to use the language they use and easily understand,” says Steven.

He adds that hip hop is a music genre that keeps him thinking about the different ways in which he can encourage young people who find themselves in difficult situations.

“After losing my mother while I was still in Grade Seven, I thought my life would never be like those of the other children of my age,” he says, adding that after losing his mother the only thing that kept him and his three siblings going was the hope that one day things would change for the better.

“If I want a good life, I need to work hard for it and I know that, with the strength that I have in me, I will achieve my dream,” Steven strongly believes.

Cassper Nyovest and the Teargas hip-hop group are the artists with whom he wants to do a collaboration in the future.

He has already released two singles and says he hopes to drop a full album before the end of next year.

He has been in the music industry for only four years and Steven says he has been faced with many challenges, such as not getting enough exposure and not being taken seriously by the community.

He can also be found on the social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter.

His name on Facebook is Stephen Vavo Monoki and his Twitter handle is @lilvavo.
