Latest news: Welgedacht’s little mascot dies

The lifeless body of a five-year-old boy was found in a swimming pool in Welgedacht yesterday afternoon (September 11).

The boy was allegedly playing at a friend’s house when he fell into the pool.

The friend ran to the house and reported the incident to his parents.

Sheldon Richards who tried to save the little boy, says the residents at the house where the accident took place, immediately called the father of the boy who fell into the pool.

Both the deceased boy’s parent ran past Richards’ house requesting Richard’s help.

At his arrival at the house, Richards saw two men in the swimming pool with the little boy’s body.

Richard’s first reaction was to call for help but did not have his cellphone with him.

He ran back home to call ER24 while running back to the scene.

Back at the house the boy’s lifeless body was next to the pool.

With Richards still on the phone with ER24, they guided him through the CPR process of saving the boy’s life.

He was still trying to save the child long after the emergency services hung up.

The paramedics arrived shortly after Richards realised his efforts were in vain.

The paramedics declared the boy dead.

An emotional Richards says his family and that of the deceased boy have been friends for years.

Richards says he loved this little boy and many people regarded the boy as Welgedacht’s little mascot.

“My heart goes out to the family,” he adds.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says the police arrived at the house to take statements from the relevant people.
